How Interstate Moving Cost Works
Every interstate quote starts from two numbers: shipment weight and route miles. A 2-bedroom home averages 5,000–6,000 lbs; each additional bedroom adds roughly 1,500–2,500 lbs. Carriers convert weight × distance into a linehaul price, then add services: packing, stairs or elevator access, shuttle trucks for tight streets, storage-in-transit, and valuation coverage.
That's why the same 2-bedroom move can cost $1,750–$2,900 at 500 miles but $2,950–$4,900 at 2,000 — and why decluttering before the survey is the single cheapest way to cut your price.
Typical Costs by Home Size & Distance
| Home size | ~500 miles | ~1,000 miles | ~2,000 miles | ~2,700 miles (coast to coast) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $1,150–$1,950 | $1,450–$2,400 | $1,950–$3,250 | $2,300–$3,850 |
| 2 bedrooms | $1,750–$2,900 | $2,150–$3,550 | $2,950–$4,900 | $3,500–$5,800 |
| 3 bedrooms | $2,500–$4,150 | $3,050–$5,050 | $4,150–$6,900 | $4,900–$8,150 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $3,250–$5,450 | $4,000–$6,650 | $5,400–$9,000 | $6,400–$10,650 |

How is long distance moving cost calculated?
Two inputs dominate: shipment weight (driven by home size) and route miles. Carriers add access charges (stairs, long carries, shuttle trucks), packing services, and valuation coverage on top. This calculator models the mileage-and-size core so you can budget; a phone quote against your actual inventory sets the real number.
How accurate is this estimate?
It reflects typical full-service interstate pricing across thousands of route-and-size combinations, with a ±25% band. Your quote can land outside the range if your home is unusually heavy or light for its size, access is difficult, or you move at peak season. Treat it as a planning range, not a quote.
How much do movers cost for a 1,000-mile move?
Typical ranges at 1,000 miles: $1,450–$2,400 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $2,150–$3,550 for 2 bedrooms, $3,050–$5,050 for 3 bedrooms, and $4,000–$6,650 for 4+ bedrooms.
What lowers the number?
Moving October–April (10–25% below summer), flexible mid-week and mid-month pickup dates, decluttering before packing (pricing is weight-driven), packing yourself, and consolidated shipping for smaller loads — a wider delivery window in exchange for sharing trailer space.
Is there any charge for a phone quote?
No — there's no charge and no obligation. Call (866) 773-1743 and a specialist prices your exact route and inventory with FMCSA-registered carriers.
